Many people are aware that Pismo Beach boasts one of the most attractive piers along California's Central Coast. Right across from Dolphin Cove Motel, it offers immediate access to brilliant views, fishing and more. Yet still most people are unaware that Pismo's wharf and pier are practically the foundations of the town as such.

The wharf was begun in 1881 to accommodate shipping especially for lumber. The costs compared to ferrying saved the locality thousands of dollars in transportation (which meant something in those days) and allowed for business, and population to boom in Pismo Beach, which was still a very new town at that time. The land had only been leased for development a few years before by John Price, the rancher who owned El Pizmo Rancho, which consisted of all of the area around today's Pismo Beach.

Sadly, the wharf was lost not long after due to a horrific storm in 1890, but it was rebuilt 1924 much longer and larger both than either before or today. It featured a handcart rail that extended the full length and many buildings such as the Royal Cafe where residents could go for music, dancing and entertainment. It is said to have been so long that Navy ships could pull up alongside and dock to allow the sailors ashore. Once again the pier had brought life into Pismo Beach.

Today's pier is was built in the 1980's after another large storm came and took 500 feet off of the end and wrecked most of the rest. It stands today as both a service to the people and a reminder of our past. Come walk down a unique over-the-sea memory lane in beautiful historic Pismo Beach.

Did you know that the name "Pismo" comes from the language of the Chumash Indians who lived here for thousands of years? It means "tar" and was probably given that ugly name to keep tourists off of the locals' beautiful beaches. However, the secret is out now and so we are doing our best to accommodate everyone who comes here for the fabulous fishing, surfing and other recreational beach activity.
At Dolphin Cove Motel, your room has a clear view of the popular wharf on which locals and tourists alike fish, crab or admire the seabirds that land on the piers. You will have access to a bike and surf rental shop across the parking lot, and, right in the middle of town, you are only a short walk from restaurants where you can eat the same local seafood that has made this area a center for culture for millennia.
The Chumash Indians have a legend that seven hungry boys, once sprinkled in goose down, transformed into geese and flew away to the north. Wherever you are flying from, if you are hungry for adventure and great fresh-caught seafood, this is the place for you.
